PATIENTLY WAITING FOR A TRAGEDY

Ma called up today morning at about 9-ish. It was unusual as I spoke to her yesterday only. And from the little quiver in her voice when she spoke, I could make out there was something wrong. My sleep vanished instantly and I sat up to listen to her carefully. She started with her usual, "Are you still sleeping? Its past 9am..." bit. (That's mid-day for her and dawn for me)

Then she came to the real point and it hit me hard... Planetary positions may trigger an earthquake in Assam tomorrow at around 8am. Its magnitude to expected to be of 8.5 by the Richter Scale, which is of a great intensity... almost that of the Tsunami...

For a moment I felt like losing consciousness but ma still kept on talking about their plans.... how she plans to cook everyone's favourite for tonight's dinner at home (just in case...), how she would go to her yoga classes tomorrow morning at 5 and then coming back she plans to make breakfast sooner than usual and if in case the earthquake doesn't happen, what she plans to buy as a gift for our neighbour Dutta-aunty's new-born grand-child...

Just after hearing this much I could not register anything else in my head, the rest was all blabber. My whole thought-process froze and I got nervous... I still am. I asked them to just start off for here right away. But she would not listen. Neither would my dad or my sisters. They would just wait there and be prepared to face come what may. Scenes from the movie TITANIC keep flashing by infront of me and in my mind.... how they all embrace death when they are caught in that sinking ship. What do you feel and how can you prepare for such a natural destruction? I don't know. But I can only pray that a miracle happens and prevents this earthquake from taking place. Amen!

Hey... came in from Anumita's place.

Can't imagine what it must feel like to "wait for a tragedy"...

Only advice that I can give you - is to hang in there. You can achieve nothing by worrying. God will work things out for the best.

Tc, I'll be back :)

Melody & Harry: Thanks for coming by. Just waited today morning with the TV on with AAJ TAK and many other channels doing the live coverage. Though they had mentioned that people did not panic and everything was under control, people did panic and were very anticipative and the weather was also very bad like the one before an earthquake. But everyone was prepared. Schools were called OFF too. Nothing happened so far... thankfully. But can't say anything till the 11th. Till then, keeping my fingers crossed. Hope God listens to all the prayers.

Err not being a contrarian just for the sake of being one. But earthquakes are not caused by planetary alignments unless she is talking about it from an Astrological point of view. If that is the case then it is a case of belief.

Does Assam have a history of quakes? Pardon my ignorance here.
All that aside hope nothing happens.

i sincerely hope tht nothing of tht sort happens .. but i still think tht they shld come to ur place... try convincing them again

Sanjay: It was not my ma's superstition but was predicted by a south-indian scientist and it was all over the news. Assam has a history of a massive earthquake in the 1950s when our grand-parents were still young and they used to say that many lives and all properties were lost as it continued for many many days. Assam also faces a lot of floods as well almost every year, so the people there are used to natural calamities. But this prediction was something big and obviously people do get panicky once they know that such a thing's gonna happen.
The time of occurence was supposed to be today morning at 8:21am but nothing happened and the scientist who had predicted this, said that the danger-period is not over till the 11th.
So, we are still praying and hoping that nothing happens.

Sudeep: Thanks dude. Hope nothing happens. Need your support and prayers. My parents wont leave the place with everything behind. They have their own set of reasons and I fail to convince them for anything at all ever since I remember. But dont worry. I am hoping everything will be fine.

Saurabhi: Thanks babes, for your kind words. Hope everything goes ok.

Thanks for the explain, but I am not sure earthquake prediction can be called an exact science.

So, we are still praying and hoping that nothing happens.

All I can say is Amen!

Hey dont worry so much. My parents are kind of chilled. I've just told them, you guys better be outdoors in the morning. But it was my sis in law who dramatically wanted to hear our voices one last time and asked us to take care of her baby. She planned to save the kid even if she died and had instructed everyone that he be handed over to his mama-maami!!

you can't predict mother nature.
i live in the earthquake area...luckily the earthquake shock was minimal.
i remember they say they can only warn people in 20 mins. but what are you going to do? you can't runaway...

i don't think you can really prepare for this kind of things. just store extra water, food, first aid, flaslights in case of any emergency.

stay safe...don't worry too much. anything can happen!

Elaine: I'm in Delhi, which was not supposed to be affected...only the north-east...where my family is. But nothing happened so far. All's well.

Manoj: Don't worry, everyone's safe and fine. No earthquake came by...thankfully!

i had a left a comment "earthquake cant be predicted with accuracy...science hasnt advanced that much...hope this will give you solace"...but the comment failed to appear on ur blog

The earthquake did take place......either it is a coincidence or this Chennai based scientist has been able to create a mathematical model which no scientist has ever been able to do so....fortunately earthquake was a mild one...i hope ur folks are all well

Priyanka Mahanta Pandiyan said...

Sherriff: Well, I don't know but my folks in Guwahati did not experience any earthquake at all so far (thankfully) and they are all safe. I believe it must have been somewhere near the suggest point Dibrugarh.
